As company constructs borehole, bus stop shelter for residents
Many in Umuototute village in Umuocha Amawuihe Autonomous Community in
Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State are singing with joy. And
they have more than enough reason to do so.
Just recently, they witnessed the official handover of a water project and bus stop shelter undertaken by Shanghai Aluminum Company as part of the company’s Corporate Social responsibility initiative in its host community. It was a gesture that prompted all and sundry, young and old, to troop out in wild celebration, dancing and rejoicing on the occasion.
“For several years, we have suffered greatly because we lacked good drinking water in this community.” These were the exact words of Jude Opara, Chairman of the village as he joined the rest of the residents in singing the praise of the company.
Opara said before the company embarked on providing a borehole for the community, most families in the area spent well over N500 daily to buy drinking water and to accomplish other domestic chores. He revealed that there used to be the Ogelemmiri stream, which served as the people’s source of water. Unfortunately, he noted, it was destroyed during the construction of the dual carriage on Orlu Road by the Rochas Okorocha administration. Since then, the entire community had been living without any source of drinking water.
“The company did not just drill a borehole but also built a tank and provided a generating set to pump water in case of power failure so that there would be water always in the community; we cannot thank them enough.”
He also commended the company for building a bus stop for the community, which he said had become a landmark, noting that the Umuototue village was the gate way to Amawuihe Autonomous Community.
Traditional ruler of the community, Eze Clifford Amadi, said that the borehole was a great relief to the entire community, as the people would no longer have to buy water for their domestic use. The monarch urged other companies operating in the community to emulate the good gesture of the management of Shanghai Aluminum Company which had not only provided employment for the youths of the community but had equally helped the community in solving one of its critical problems which was water.
Also speaking at the official commissioning of the projects, the Principal Secretary to Imo State Governor, Dr Pascal Obi, commended the philanthropic spirit of Mr. Festus Uzoma Mbisiogu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shanghai Aluminum Company. He called on the host community to reciprocate the good gesture of the management of the company by providing a conducive environment for its operation.
He noted that Mr. Mbisiogu, who is from Ideato area of the state, could have sited the company in his area but rather chose to site it in their community.
“He has not only provided employment to the people of the community and its environs but has equally been contributing to the development of this area by providing clean water and building a bus stop. This is highly commendable and the only way that the community can thank him is by providing the enabling environment for the operation of the company to continue to thrive. I am sure that Mr. Mbisiogu who is my brother will do a lot more for the people of the community.”
Similarly, the immediate past Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Imo State, Kenneth Emelu, praised Mbisiogu for his effort, noting that it was the 19th borehole he had sunk in various communities across the state in the past four years.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the company has said that the essence of giving back to the community is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and a way of maintaining cordial relationship with its host community, adding that it was germane to the smooth operation of the company.
“Today, we are here to commission and hand over the borehole and bus stop constructed by Shanghai Aluminum for its host community and will not fail to use this opportunity to enjoin other firms and foundations to help the state government in engaging in community development projects, especially in their host communities in order to alleviate the suffering of the people. In doing so, the government would have more funds to embark on more tasking areas of governance.”
He pointed out that water represents life, without which no living thing can exist. He appealed to the community to ensure proper use of the facility. He enjoined them to call upon him whenever the facility experienced any form of problem.
Some other dignitaries present at the commissioning ceremony included Prof Chima Iwuchukwu, Vice Chancellor of Tansian University; Ifeanyi Nnataraonye, member representing Mbaitoli State Constituency, Eze Clifford Amadi, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Ashiegbu amongst others.
