Russian clubs Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow made late attempts to hijack the deal
Marko Grujic will undergo a medical on Monday ahead of completing his £5.1m move to Liverpool.
The Red Star Belgrade midfielder arrived in Liverpool on Sunday evening having already agreed a five-year contract with the Reds.
The deal will see him return straight to Serbia for the remainder of the season on loan.
Russian clubs Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow made late attempts to hijack the deal for the 19-year-old, with both offering 10m euros - higher bids than Liverpool’s - but Grujic was insistent on moving to Anfield.
Initially, Liverpool feared they would miss out to Inter Milan in the battle for the 19-year-old’s signature, but Klopp became personally involved - speaking to the Serbian Under-21 international - and helped swing the deal in his favour.
Writing on his Facebook page, the Serbian international intimated the move will be completed on Monday, but the ECHO understands an announcement is not due for another 24 hours.
“On January 4, I will become a Liverpool player,” he wrote.
Under the terms of the deal, the Reds will receive 1million euros (£730,000) back as a loan fee after agreeing to let him remain in his homeland until the end of the season.
Red Star have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause.
Grujic came up through the ranks at Red Star’s youth academy and made his first-team debut at the age of 17 in May 2013.
He has since gone on to become a firm fans’ favourite and has helped Red Star build a commanding lead at the top of the table this season.
Grujic, who has scored five goals for Red Star so far this term, was part of the Serbia squad who won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand back in June.
