Louis van Gaal to quit Manchester United after Southampton loss - but chiefs said ‘No’

Paschal Nnawunezi       Tuesday, 26 January 2016

It is understood LVG made the offer to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward after the 1-0 home defeat by Southampton and the pair talked again the following day.
But Woodward wants the Dutchman to stay until the summer rather than make any changes mid-season.

Van Gaal made the offer to help Woodward and does not want to make the situation difficult if the United chief believes a change is needed now.

He is extremely loyal to Woodward who appointed him, backed him in the transfer market to the tune of £250million and supported everything he has wanted to do with the club.

The United manager, 64, agreed to stay on for now or until there comes a time when Woodward agrees to part ways by mutual consent.

Van Gaal went home to Holland on Sunday for a short break to celebrate his daughter’s birthday and the pair will talk again on his return.

The players and staff were given both Sunday and yesterday off.

Things hit a new low on Saturday when LVG was booed off at Old Trafford when they managed just one shot on target in their defeat by Saints. The clamour for him to go amongst the fans is huge.

United are ten points behind leaders Leicester and five off fourth-placed Spurs. But Woodward is hoping United can grab a Champions League spot then make big changes.
Defeat at Derby in the FA Cup on Friday and another poor result against Stoke at home the following Tuesday might leave him with no choice.
